The blues is a funny old genre. Just when you think it’s dead, new players warp it and buff it and throttle it and massage it into glorious new directions. Tonight’s three players all have the blues in common, in some form or other, and all are stunning performers.
James Southwell (blues/roots/rock)
The charismatic frontman of an electric blues band, prodigious guitarist and songwriter James Southwell also performs solo acoustic sets – which is what he’ll be serving up for us this Saturday night. One thing’s for sure, whether performing electric or acoustic, James has an absolutely stunning voice, cresting atop earthy blues-roots numbers.
Brooke Taylor (blues/rock/pop)
Brooke’s long been a favourite at The Chandelier Room, with her bittersweet tunes and characteristic honeyed vocal tone. She was due to play here in April, but had to postpone; lucky for us, she’s back on our stage accompanied by in-demand fiddle player Duncan Yardley. Peachy.
Tobias Moldenhauer (folk/indie/blues)
Tobias Moldenhauer recorded his solo demo in Europe in 2005 before hitting the road to play music in both hemispheres. This year sees the tour of his latest release Solitary Bones. His evocative performances feature effects-driven acoustic guitar, bottleneck slide resonator guitar and melodic fingerpicking in open tunings coupled with soulful vocals.
